Recent news has bought to light that 777 studios, developers of the wonderful WWI Sim Rise of Flight, and 1C Games, who bought us Il2:Cliffs of Dover have merged and will be working on a new title, slated for a 2014 release “Battle of Stalingrad”

Official Announcement

Good day pilots!

So, the long wait is over and we’re ready to put the rumors to rest.

777 Studios partners with 1C to form 1C Game Studios (1CGS) and develop IL-2 Sturmovik: Battle of Stalingrad

You can read the full announcement on the official website of the game at http://il2sturmovik.net. We also invite you to our new forum, where you will find additional information about the project and will be able to ask questions and chat with the developers.

To all our ROF customers and fans – this is not the end of ROF development or new content. Please do not panic. We are still working on the details and we will inform you once we have them. Right now all current releases we promised are on schedule.

On a personal note – the ROF community and your support has made this day possible. We have always wanted to make a WWII product and your support of our WWI product has afforded us this opportunity. Now you will be able to enjoy both WWI and WWII products produced by our team and new expanded team. If all goes to plan there will be much to be happy about in the coming months and years. We hope you will stick by us and continue to support our flight-sim endeavors.

Onward and upward!

So what does this mean? It means we have a good chance of receiving a well made and realistic return to the glory days of the original IL2. The full official announcement and FAQ from the Battle of Stalingrad site goes into further detail about who what and when.

Slated for a 2014 release, and using the attractive 777 developed ‘Digital Nature’ engine and with 1c’s experience in ww2 simulations (yes so CLOD let many people down, we can hope they have learned from their mistakes and return more to a mindset of the original) this is one title that I, as a major Eastern Front fan and massive fan of both Il2 and ROF and looking most eagerly towards.

Time will now tell, as development continues and we start to see WIP and possible beta builds over the coming months whether both studios can come together to give the demanding Flight Sim community a game they could be happy with to fly for a long time to come.

For now I will just have to satiate myself with ROF and the original (with the Dark Blue World modification) and a bit of DCS when I have the patience.

More to come as I follow this story, I may even create a dedicated page to this on my main site.
